There are three main types of written characters in Japan
Gosh!!!: kanji, hiragana and katakana. Roman leters are also used. Kanji characters
were already in use in China more than three
tousand years ago. They are ideograms developed from pictograms and signs. For example, the character meaning the
sun was drawn in the form of the sun and
that meanings a tree was made to resemble
the shape of a tree...
On the basis of the Chinese and Japanese
readings of these characters there were devised
the phonetic manyokana characters which in turn were simplified
into the hiragana and katakana systems in
about the ninth century. Katakana characters
are mainly used to express loan words from English, Dutch, Javanese, Portuguese
and Korean, Italian, French, German and Malasian
etc... These words may cause 'Japanese English'
as you know!
